A Little Work, A Little Play,
One Step Closer to Our Goals Today!
This Spring, three Easterseals Employment
Services program participants from the Millville
Work Training Center were provided with a great
opportunity to participate in job sampling at
the Wheaton Arts Center in Millville, NJ. The
event they worked was titled “Wheaton Springs”
and featured Asian cultural performances and
exhibits from artists throughout New Jersey and
the tri-state area.
The participants were assigned to the “greeter”
station and were requested to welcome each
visitor, provide them with the day’s schedule of
events, and a Wheaton Arts magnet.
Additionally, each participant took a
turn requesting and writing down the zip
codes of each group of visitors to help
with the organization’s future marketing
efforts. Participants also identified who
was classified as an “adult,” “senior adult,”
“student,” or “child under 5.” All of this
information had to be gathered quickly, as
multiple groups of visitors entered the event
simultaneously. I, the Easterseals Career
Exploration Coordinator, only assisted
them when questions arose about specific
workshops or performances that were
occurring throughout the day.
The group did an excellent job at the greeter table, and we have been invited back to participate in future
events. We’re all looking forward to returning to
Wheaton Arts throughout the year!
Our career exploration program provides
community-based job experiences to people
with disabilities and exposes them to a variety
of different career opportunities. We rarely stay
in the first job we ever try. With experience, we
learn what the best job is for us.
