SCSEP Spotlight Merenda Fay Scott

LIVE · LEARN · WORK · PLAY “Easterseals was a life saver for me; I began as a training
assistant in the SCSEP office in Union County. From there, I
moved up to being a Resource Assistant. It was very gratifying to
assist people who were in the same position that I was … it was
the best of both worlds, helping others while being helped.

I was helped in so many ways during my training as a participant
in Easterseals and to put the icing on the cake, as I was
approaching my durational limit, I was offered a position as
Senior Resource Assistant and then promoted to Resource
Specialist.”

“I moved to New Jersey from Chicago four years ago wanting to
work in an area where I can not only earn a paycheck, but live a
meaningful life. As soon as I learned about Easterseals, I knew
that’s where I needed and wanted to work.

I am proud to serve seniors with barriers in their life, especially
with disability and language as I know what it is to have a
language barrier.

I like the nature of the business. All of the seniors around me
remind me of my mother, sister, aunt, or my father and brother. I
am happy assisting seniors to improve their quality of life.”

Vanessa Almeida

"I have been a Direct Support Professional my entire career
and now I continue my journey through the Easterseals SCSEP
Program. Helping others has always been a way of helping
myself. I have always had the ability to relate to clients’ concerns
and life experiences. My goal has always been to assist in the
development of solutions for my clients. The SCSEP program
lets me continue to do that.

Our clients look to us for training to become employable. Support
in both finding and removing barriers to employment - such as
literacy and homelessness. It is an honor for me to do what I
love, which is helping people reach their life-long goals no matter
what obstacles they are confronted with. Seeing the mature
worker population excel in today’s society is the greatest reward I
could receive, because I am one of them."
